The Colorado Rapids have sent former MLS MVP Christian Gomez back to DC United in exchange for veteran midfielder Ivan Guerrero. We also received a Designated Player roster spot and D.C. United’s second round 2010 SuperDraft Pick.

Gomez was one of my favorite players in 2007, with his quick feet and ability to see the field. However he never seemed to be able to secure a starting role, and it seems to be a trade that is in both parties’ best interests.

Gary Smith’s take:

“I believe Christian will be delighted to return to D.C. United, where he is comfortable and had some success in the past, and both I and our entire staff wish him all the best. In return, we get some much-needed support and strength in a left-sided player like Ivan Guerrero, whose international and MLS experience is tremendous.”

Earlier today the Rapids Undercurrent blog reported deals reached with key young stars. The press release just came out in the last few minutes, and the Rapids have inked 4 year deals with midfielders Colin Clark and Nick LaBrocca and defenders Jordan Harvey and Kosuke Kimura.

For me, Clark and LaBrocca were the key signings of the bunch. I have to agree with Mark on the Undercurrent blog comments, Kimura has been underwhelming. Hopefully this year he can step up his play.

“I am overwhelmed that these players have committed their futures to the club,” said Rapids’ head coach Gary Smith.

“They are all talented players that we felt we needed to make a commitment to from our side as well. I am pleased that they all see that their futures are bright here and I don’t see any reason why the potential that each one of them still has within themselves can not be fulfilled here.”
